Writing 1

This page is divided into 3 sections.  Read each section carefully first before beginning.

  • Section 1 gives you directions.
  • Section 2 gives you the assignment.
  • Section 3 gives you resources to guide you in your work.

Section 1:  Directions

You may want to do the exercise in a word document first, make sure it's okay, then upload this document using Google Documents or once you're in this Google Site, you can create your own page and copy and paste your assignment. It's up to you how you do this.

Now  you're ready to write--but before you do, please go through each of the resources, in Section 3, in the order given.

Section 2: Assignment

We are going to work on an Informal Essay
In case the URL doesn't work, try here (copy and paste into your browser):

This is a good way to start because "In writing, informality depends less on subject or structure than on the writing context. Informal essays assume a per-sonal stance. They suggest close connections among writer, reader, and subject."

That is, I'm asking you to start by writing something personal, something you're familiar with, choosing your own form and direction.

The Assignment:
DESCRIBE AN IMPORTANT MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THUS FAR.  BUT IN DOING SO, THIS MOMENT HAS TO ALSO TELL US SOMETHING OR SHOW US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR CULTURE.

Notice the word "Describe." You may want to look it up in the dictionary to make sure you have a complete sense of what this requires.  Make sure you give us plenty of "color"; that is, you show us enough of place and people to make the description appear as if it is a movie or a picture.  Also, you can, of course, use dialog, even made up dialog between people to enable the reader to grasp the full intent of your ideas.

Section 3: Resources

These resources are meant to be examined in the order given and before you begin writing.  Each section has exercises. Do these on your own, in you own Google Notebook that you create BUT DO NOT SHARE.  I may ask you to share this with me once I see your essay. This will enable me see and understand how best to help you with your writing.

1. Basic Sentence Concepts
2. Expanding the Basic Pattern
3. Possessive Forms
4. Agreement
5. Agreement.2
6. Advanced Composition
